Policies:

  • Classes are non-refundable, except in case of studio cancellation.

    • In case of studio power outage, severe weather, or equipment issue/failure, or other studio cancellation reason, you will be notified as soon as possible by email that your class has to be canceled.  You will be refunded the total amount or you can choose to reschedule.

    • If you are not able to attend your booked class, you may gift it to another person, find another person/group to take your spot, or if given 2 weeks notice, you may contact the studio to reschedule to a different date at no additional charge.  Please notify the studio (sfgwashburn@gmail.com) if you are gifting your class or need to reschedule.  Not providing enough notice or sending your email to the incorrect address will result in you being fully charged for not attending your class.

  • Safety glasses or eye glasses are required to participate and to be in the hot shop.

    • Extra pairs safety glasses for use during the class are available at the hot shop.

  • Closed toe shoes are required to participate - no exceptions.

  • Class participants under the age of 18 will need a guardian present.

  • The hot shop is...hot!  Assume that everything you touch may be hot, so be cautious and aware at all times.

  • Safety is #1!  If unsafe behaviors occur that put you or someone else in danger, you will no be allowed to continue to participate in the class.

  • Classes are currently for ages 12 and up.  However, modifications can be made if you have a younger than 12 year old person(s) in your group.  See FAQs below for more info.

  • Waiver of Liability will need to be signed for each participant.  Read and print out, sign, and bring to class.  Extra copies available at the studio.  Access the waiver here:

FAQs:

  • What should I bring to class?

    • Water bottle (stay hydrated!), glasses or safety glasses (if you have them).

    • Optional: a camera or phone to capture your experience.

    • An open mind and sense of adventure!

  • What should I wear to class?

    • Closed-toe shoes are required.  You will not be able to participate without them.

    • Cotton clothing (or other natural fibers) are recommended; synthetic materials can become quite uncomfortable due to the heat of the furnace.

    • Do not wear flowing clothing, such as long skirts or shirts with bell sleeves, as these can catch on tools and equipment.

  • How many items do you make at a class?

    • Each participant will make one item.

  • What should I expect when I come to class?

    • Arrive a few minutes early to get settled in. You will get checked in and fill out a liability waiver. The instructor will start out by giving you a bit of background information on the process and how to navigate the studio safely.  Next comes a demonstration on how the product is crafted: gathering the glass, turning the punty rod, how to sit at the bench and use the tools to get the desired shape, and how to add color to the glass.  The instructor may also provide another short demonstration on how a bubble is blown using a blow pipe. Then you’ll be ready to roll!  Students will then take turns stepping over to the bench to make their glass item.  While others in your group are taking their turn, make sure to stay attentive and learn also by watching.

    • The studio is located in a large garage/shed at the end of a long (1/4 mile) long gravel driveway.  It's also still used as a garage, so you may see non-studio related items around and the space has a "garage atmosphere."  haha  I do have two very friendly golden retrievers that also live on the property and may at times be outside.

  • Will I shape the whole item or will the instructor do most of it?

    • The instructor will assist you, however you will complete the majority of the creation.  With that being said, your item may look unique and do not expect it to look like the ones sold at Scarlet Fire Glassworks on your first try. But, how it turns out is part of the fun! If there is a step in the process you do not feel comfortable doing, let the instructor know and they can do it for you.  The classes are repeatable, so the more you do it, the better you will become!

  • What if I have someone younger than 12 years old in my group, can we still take a class?

    • The current classes are for ages 12 and up, however school age kids 11 years old and younger can still be a part of your group, they will just assist in making a different type of item and not a flower or a paperweight.  For example, they can assist in making a paw print disk using a mold (see the memorial glass page for an example of what that looks like) which is a very fun and creative experience for young kids.

  • Will I be able to take my item home at the end of class?

    • Your project will need approximately 24 hours to cool to room temperature, so you will not be able to take your item home immediately after class. You will be notified when it's ready for pick up and can be arranged to pick up at SFG's downtown Washburn location (123 W. Bayfield St.) or can be shipped to one household for an additional cost.

    • Items will be grouped by class and we will do our best to keep track of which items belong to which person in the group.

  • If we have more people in our group, can we still take a class?

    • Email sfgwashburn@gmail.com if you would like to see if more people can be added at an additional cost.

  • Can others come to watch me take a class?

    • Yes!

  • What colors will be used during the classes?

    • Colors will rotate and vary depending upon what is available/in stock at the studio.  You will not be able to request certain colors prior to your class.

  • Is the studio accessible?

    • The studio space is wheelchair accessible to enter, however the glassblowing bench technically is not. However, we may be able to modify the use of the bench or have the person make an item that we can modify the technique so it would work out.  Left-handers are welcome! The tools also only come in one size.

    • There is a bathroom (not fancy as it is in a garage) and a sink is available to refill your water bottle.

  • Can I purchase other glass items while at my class?

    • Yes, there are a small amount of items available to purchase at the studio payable by credit card, PayPal, or Venmo.  Cash is also accepted (no checks), but will need exact amount which would include tax.

  • How do I get to the hot shop studio to take my class?

    • The hot shop is located approximately 3 miles northwest of the city of Washburn, WI.  Specific address and directions will be provided in the confirmation email after booking.  There is a 1/4 mile long gravel driveway to enter and the studio is located in the large pole building and you can park in front of the pole building.  Be watchful for deer and road conditions in the winter/spring can be variable or challenging.
